Old Mission State Park – Cataldo

This striking Greek Revival style church was designed by Jesuit priest Anthony Ravalli and built by Coeur d’Alene Indians in 1850-1853. The Mission of the Sacred Heart to the Coeur d’Alene was a thriving agricultural village, mission and way station for travelers across the Mullan Road for more than a quarter century.  It is the oldest building in Idaho.

Oden Hall

In 1928, Mrs. John Lloyd suggested that the Oden community should have a central gathering point. She presented her idea to a recently formed group of local women, the Oden Busy Bees. Matt Schmidt donated the land for the building. Others donated lumber and construction materials. Volunteers provided the labor. Despite the Great Depression, Oden Hall was completed in 1931 and is still used as a community hall by many of the same families.

Here are some of their stories.

Dover Community Church

“Can you imagine this church coming down the river and staying together as it did?  It’s really amazing!” says Gloria Ballou, a local Dover resident.

Lifelong residents and members of the Dover Community Church share stories of their quaint town and historic church.  From it’s relocation on barges down the Pend Oreille River in the 20’s to their memories of childhood, weddings, community, and their preservation efforts.
